Book Review: Maybe in Another Life

 

I should not have read this book. I'm always saying I'm not a fan of women's fiction that focuses predominantly on romance and the Amazon summary made it clear that's what this would be. What got me was the premise: the narrative splits after the first chapter and follows the main character in both directions, depending on a single decision she make.

It sounded so much like the premise of one of my favorite movies: Sliding Doors. and the commentary at the end of the book explains how that was the inspiration.

The book splits the story when Hannah decides whether to stay out at the bar with the dreamy guy or go home with her roommate. In the divided timeline that follows,  Hannah falls for two different men and she believes each one is her soul mate.

Even though the romantic story line was definitely the focus, there was also a lot of attention paid to personal growth and facing the challenges in other relationships. In fact, the one constant in both narratives is her best female friend, which makes one wonder if she is the actual soul mate.
